Bastille Day, celebrated on July 14th, is a national holiday for the French, commemorating the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Make this a special day at your home by celebrating with a French themed dinner and crafts for the kids.
Appetizers:
To set the mood for your guests, serve a selection of French cheeses and wine. You can also set the tone at the dinner table by making cute little menu cards out of vellum, and tie them to baguettes as each guests’ place setting. You can also customize napkins for the table by using a fleur de lis stamp to bring a lovely French theme to them.
Main Course:
For the main course, make a classic French meal that your guests are sure to remember. Coq au Vin is a traditional French dish made with chicken, wine, mushrooms, and bacon. You can also make individual Nicose Salads for each of your guests. This classic French side dishes uses eggs, potatoes, and green beans for a savory take on a normal salad.
Dessert:
Top off the night’s festivities by making a dessert that will please anyone with a sweet tooth. Make a macaroon cake that is both delicious and beautiful. Consider adding sparklers to it for extra flair. If you don’t have time to make your own macaroons, don’t worry I got mine at Lady Yum. They offer amazing macaroons. It will be hard to choose which ones to take home.
Kids Crafts:
While you and your guests are resting from your amazing French themed dinner, keep the kids entertained with this cardboard Eiffel Tower craft.
Materials Needed:
Large cardboard box
Box Cutter
Tape
Tin Foil
Tacky glue
Instructions:
- Step 1: First, have the kids draw a picture of the Eiffel Tower with a width the same as their shoulders. Then cut out four pieces. Print out a picture of the Eiffel Tower so that they have it for reference during this step.
- Step 2: Then, have them tape all the corners together by bending each piece so that they meet at the top.
- Step 3: Next, have every one cut out a square equal in size to the base of the Eiffel Tower. Then cut out 4 strips to attach to each side of the base. Once this is done, cut out a hole for the head.
- Step 4: Finally, cover each piece of cardboard in foil, and attach the Eiffel Tower to the base with a hot glue gun.
