Recently, I was asked to plan a friend of my daughter’s 8th Birthday Party. She had requested a Mermaid theme but it was also her Golden Birthday so I wanted to incorporate that into the theme. I was excited to get started creating a magical underwater scene that would inspire the guests to really feel like they were mermaids for a day.
Putting together party decorations is one of my favorite parts of planning, so I found a light blue shower curtain on Amazon that I used for a background. The ruffles on this curtain were perfect for creating the effect of waves. Next, I draped it with golden garland and set it atop a small table which I attached a blue, purple and gold tassel garland and fisherman’s netting. I also hung a golden banner that said “Under the Sea.” To top it all off, I made cute octopus decorations by hot gluing white festoon to blue paper lanterns. The festoon was light enough to move in the breeze and gave a realistic feeling to the entire set up.
I knew without a doubt that the guests would love dressing up as mermaids so I asked my friend Cristan at resplendicity to help sew these adorable golden mermaid tails for the guests to wear.
For wands, I simply picked up starfish and wooden dowels and Michaels that I spray painted gold. To make them truly magical, I attached turquoise and gold ribbons and placed a sparkly jewel in the center.
Keeping a group of giggling mermaids entertained is easy when you plan magical crafts. For one activity, I asked my friend, Andie Richardson, make me a mermaid tail image that I printed at Kinkos and attached to a cardboard backing that was painted gold. I grabbed some easels at the craft store and the girls used those to paint and glue sequins onto their masterpieces.
I also gathered some bottles along with paper, sand, small shells and pearl beads so the girls could Make a Message in a Bottle.
The Birthday girl’s dad made some extra special cupcakes which looked delicious!
Kids always enjoy pinatas. So I repurposed a mermaid shape to create one that fit the party theme.
I love seeing the guests leave with one more rush of excitement after such a magical party, so I planned turquoise party favor boxes. I packed them with starfish clips, pearl bracelets, mermaid tattoos, a candy stick and grow-your-own mermaids.
The guests loved them, and everyone had so much fun that I hope I get asked to plan another magical party like this again.
