When we visited Paris for a week this Christmas, there was nothing more delightful then sipping a cup of vin chaud from a street vendor as we strolled through the Holiday Markets found throughout Paris.
Recently I made some Vin Chaud at home that tasted wonderful and brought back our memories of Paris. You do not need to use a fancy bottle of wine, just add a bunch of spices and the flavor becomes amazing.
For my this batch I used Cabernet Sauvignon but you could also use Merlot or any blend. This drink is perfect to make for a party. Just throw everything in your slow cooker an hour or so before the guests arrive. Not only does it fill your house with the wonderful smell, but it is so easy too since the slow cooker keeps it nice and warm. All you have to do is ladle it into some glasses and garnish with an orange slice, cinnamon stick and I love the star anise.
Here is the recipe I used:
INGREDIENTS
1 (750 ml) bottle red wine
¼ cup honey
1 orange, sliced – plus more to garnish
3 whole cloves
3 green cardamom seeds
Small piece of ginger cut up
2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks, plus more to garnish
1 whole star anise
INSTRUCTIONS
- Pour the wine into a slow cooker. Stir in honey and add orange slices.
- Throw in the cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.
- Heat in slow cooker on low for 2-3 hours (or on high for 1 hour).
- To serve, remove and discard, orange slices and pour mulled wine through fine mesh strainer to remove and discard the spices.
- Pour back into the slow cooker and set on warm to maintain temperature.
- Ladle mulled wine into mugs and garnish each cup with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick and star anise to serve.
