I absolutely love this time of year! You can just feel the excitement in the air as families start getting ready for the new school year. One of the best ways to get into the spirit is to throw a Back to School party.
Since you are already spending money on school supplies, save on your party by using some DIY decorations. This is one of the easiest parties I have ever decorated. Just grab some old textbooks and some of the supplies you already bought and put them into those cute little wooden card file boxes (I found mine at Target for $3 so check those bins). Target also had lined paper garlands that were made out of felt, but you could make those if you can’t find them at your store. To top it all off, I found some more things around the house to use as decorations. There was a map, an old globe and a school bus ornament. Most likely, you have similar things around your house that can be put to fresh use at your party.
Making the treats was fun! I made frosted apple sugar cookies and cupcakes with a back to school theme. I just used fondant for the cupcake icing, and wrote cute little math problems and spelling words on them with an edible marker.
The best part of my party was this vintage kid’s desk I found at Farm Chicks Show in Spokane this past June. I gave it to my daughter for her birthday and she just loved it. It turned into an adorable photo prop and the guests love having their turn in the seat.
Some ideas to keep those little hands busy, have each kid paint their own pencils using some paint I put out and wooden stakes from Home Depot and some paint and brushes from Joann’s. It is super easy and lots of fun.
Favors were also easy, since felt book bags come together quickly. All you need is some felt, elastic and a button. Within five minutes, the kids have an awesome keepsake from your party that they can also use to carry books home from school.
The back to school season is so busy that it’s important to take some time out from your preparations to enjoy some fun. The first day of school only happens once a year so get your favorite students excited with a bash that beats all the rest.
