There are two types of people. People who are tired of the Pumpkin Spice/fall obsession and people who are driving the Pumpkin Spice/fall obsession. Guess which camp I fall into? Really, though, my obsession isn’t Pumpkin Spice.
My obsessions are this beautiful fall season and macarons. Right now, I’m just combining those loves by eating fall-inspired macaron flavors like Pumpkin Spice and Salted Caramel.
A well-made macaron is one of the best treats you can eat. They look as delicately sweet as they taste. They’ve stood the test of time –Venetian monks have been making them (and presumably sneaking them into their robes) since the 8th century AD. The Italian noblewoman Catherine de Medici brought them to France when she married Henry the II (I assume that’s at least part of why he loved her). The cookies gained prominence in France during the French Revolution, when two Benedictine nuns made and sold macarons to support themselves as they sought asylum. It’s literally a life-saving dessert, guys.
These original macarons didn’t have the “cookie” design that we now have. It wasn’t until the 1800s that someone thought to add delicious filling to the middle of two macarons. The kind you see today are made in the Parisian style, with ganache, jam or buttercream between the meringue cookies.
They now come in almost any flavor you can dream of and are beautifully colored. I like nothing more than to see them all lined up at Lady Yum in downtown Kirkland – right now, they have seasonal flavors that are to die for. Naturally this includes pumpkin spice, but they also have blackberry almond and salted brandy Nutella. Whether you’re throwing a fall party or looking to treat yourself these flavorful macarons at Lady Yum should be top of your list. Happy Fall!
