Mardi Gras season is in full swing and you don’t have to live in Louisiana to celebrate. Now while you may think that nothing sounds less kid-friendly than Mardi-Gras, the theme of Mardi Gras is fun and that is something everyone can enjoy. Costumes, dancing, food and drink are the symbols which are celebrated throughout the world, and with a few modifications, you can throw a Mardi Gras party that will be fun for kids and adults alike.
The traditional Mardi Gras colors are purple, green and gold. To decorate I used a plain purple table cloth, bright purple, green and yellow tissue paper balls and fans with colored beads. I even through in some green, purple and gold Christmas ball ornaments.
You can’t have a party without cake so I made a double layered raspberry cake frosted with the petal technique in Mardi Gras colors. At the craft store I found a little mask which I attached to a wooden dowel and used it as my cake topper. My daughter loved peeking through the mask – she loved the cake too!
I also made some basic sugar cookies which I frosted with purple buttercream and gold sprinkles, topped with sugar adornments.
Another cake that I love to make for Mardi Gras is King Cake. This year I wanted to try a slight variation from the standard King Cake by using a bundt cake with circles cut out of fondant in Mardi Gras colors. Of course the baby is still hidden inside for a guest to find.
And who doesn’t love beignets and for the adults a steaming cup of Café Du Monde Coffee and Chicory.
For a fun Carnival drink, I love making hurricanes for both the children and adults to enjoy. For our kids celebration we used a version sans alcohol using this simple recipe: Hurricane Mocktails For Kids.
For the activity, bring a little bit of New Orleans home for your little one by decorating carnival masks. This will be a sure fire way for them to have a Fat Tuesday to remember. I had a bunch of feathers and sticker gems which we used to decorate the masks but you can use just about anything, sequins, beads, ribbons, glitter, etc. Let your creativity flow. You can also use a hole punch and some elastic or wooden dowels to secure the masks.
As they say Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll!)
