April 22nd is Earth Day! Celebrate our plant by hosting an Earth Day party, community clean up, or an eco-friendly celebration. It is a great opportunity to raise environmental awareness, protect our planet and have fun all at the same time!
Earth Day is popular time for activities in public parks. Here in Seattle, the Student Conservation Association is sponsoring an event to restore Washington Park Arboretum through planting, mulching, removing invasive species and maintaining trails throughout the arboretum. If you are interested in this event check out SCA’s Event Brite page. Check with your city’s Department of Parks and Recreation to find an event near you.
You can easily take a party on the go to any park with a few simple decorations. For our party decorations I used colors that are found in nature. A natural burlap tablecloth was thrown over a picnic table and I borrowed daughter’s globe to use on the table.
This holiday encourages everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle so we used a lot of left over St. Patrick’s Day decorations like green tissue paper tassels and fans. With a few tweaks they were perfect for Earth Day.
I put together little picnic baskets for the kiddos to enjoy after their Earth Day Service Activity. I found these adorable green and turquoise baskets at Target that made the perfect lunch basket.
I filled them with turkey sandwiches wrapped in wax paper and twine, string cheese, goldfish crackers in map boxes and a chocolate chip cookie.
And for a little extra treat I made dirt puddings made with chocolate pudding, crushed Girls Scout Thin Mints and gummy worms.
We also had some Earth Oreo Cookies which my daughter loved.
I found these Scientist Kits online by Teacharoo. These hands-on DIY kits are full of science activities that will help kids learn about why it is important to take care of the Earth and conserve. The activities are simple and the materials needed are inexpensive and most of them can be found at home.
And to encourage guests to help the green movement going we used tree seedlings for party favors.
And I couldn’t resist some chocolate earths-who doesn’t love chocolate.
I hope everyone has a Happy Earth Day!
