This year my daughter and I choose the book Wonder for our book club. And our book club fell in love with Auggie.
For decorations, my friend Lauren of CreatifDesigns4You created a graphic of whiteboard cards that spelled out “Wonder”. I simply printed them at my local copy shop and used twine to make a garland.
I hot glued a bunch of paper pinwheels together and attached a print out of the book cover for another decoration.
In the book Mr. Browne is Auggie’s teacher and he introduces the concept of precepts. Each month of the school year he announces a new precept. I found the list of his precepts online and printed them out for our book club. In addition to Mr. Browne’s precepts, Auggie and his classmates provided their own over the summer so I thought it would be fun to have each girl share one of their own precepts.
As an activity I found little chalk boards and each girl wrote down their precept with a chalk writer. Afterwards we went around and they shared what they wrote.
Because our book club event was at lunch time and it was a beautiful day in Seattle, I thought it would be fun to have a picnic outside. I set up crate tables in our backyard. I found some fabric at Joann’s that matched the blue of the book cover and made a table runner. I also filled some turquoise vases with bright sunflowers and white daisies for the table.
We noshed on a variety of sandwiches along with fruit that I served in gold rimmed berry baskets.
And lemonade in turquoise milk glasses for refreshment.
For dessert we had Wonder cupcakes.
If you are looking for some good background music, here is a list of songs mentioned in the book:
WONDER by Natalie Merchant
SPACE ODDITY by David Bowie
LUCKIEST GUY ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE by The Magnetic Fields
SOLDIER’S JOY by Anonymous
BEAUTIFUL CHILD by Annie Lennox
BEAUTIFUL THINGS by Andain
STAR WARS: THRONE ROOM SCENE by John Williams
BEAUTIFUL by Christina Aguilera
CANON in D by Pachelbel
UNDER PRESSURE by Queen
After we ate we discussed the book. It was easy to find discussion questions online.
For our final activity I printed out a sheet of cardstock that I had printed with the words My Self Portrait on the top. The girls could pick whether to create their Self Portrait or their Self Portrait as an animal just like Auggie’s class.
And because we are heading into summer I thought it would be fun to give each girl a Wonder Journal that they can use during the summer along with some pencils from Target’s dollar bin and Wonder Bookmark. I put the favors in a brown sack lunch bag with their names printed on the top.
If you haven’t read Wonder, check it out. It is a great book about kindness and empathy. It is also coming out in theaters in November.
Be Kind out there!
